  1. Any member of the family Alcidae, consisting 
  2. of marine diving birds including razorbills,
  3. puffins, murres, and guillemots. Confined to
  4. the northern hemisphere, they feed on fish 
  5. and use their wings to `fly' underwater in
  6. pursuit. The largest was the great auk 
  7. Pinguinis impennis, 75 cm/2.5 ft and 
  8. flightless, the last recorded individual
  9. being killed in 1844. The little auk Alle
  10. alle, 20 cm/8 in long, is an arctic bird that
  11. winters as far south as Britain. The smallest
  12. is the least auklet, Aethia pusilla, 
  13. 6 in/15 cm long. It is found along Pacific 
  14. coasts from Siberia to Alaska.
